Malpractices - JAMB Reschedules Fresh Exam For Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed its readiness to conduct fresh examinations for some of the candidates who sat its 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) but whose results were withheld over alleged cases of examination malpractices.

JAMB had on March 20 while announcing the release of the results of the examination declared that the results of a total of 111,981 candidates were being withheld over cases of malpractices and would not rush to release the results.

But in an exclusive interview with New Telegraph on Monday, the Head of Media and Public Relations of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin disclosed that as part of efforts to ensure fairness and justice, the examination body was prepared to reschedule some of the candidates whose results had been withheld due to their alleged involvement in malpractices.

According to Benjamin, those to be rescheduled are those whose involvement in the malpractices at the affected CBT centres could not be clearly identified through the CCTV footage after careful investigations by the Board.

He said: “JAMB would not want to unfairly treat any candidate and after careful study of the CCTV footage, there are candidates whose results are currently being withheld but whose level of complicity in the alleged malpractices cannot be ascertained"

“So as a responsible and responsive examination body, JAMB would reschedule these candidates and conduct a fresh examination for them under conducive atmosphere."

Benjamin, however, did not give figure of the affected candidates, but added that the rescheduled examination would hold in May.

JAMB in March had explained that a total of 1,502,978 candidates of 1,652,825 who registered for the examination had their results fully processed and released, saying, “after viewing all CCTV footage during the conduct of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and considering reports from our supervisors, monitors and other independent Nigerians who took interest in promoting the quality of public examination in Nigeria, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of 1,502,978 candidates, who sat for the 2018 UTME.

“A total of 1,652,825 candidates had indicated interest by registering for the examination, but a total of 112,331 candidates’ results are yet to be released out of which 350 are the results of the blind candidates which would be released soon. However, 111,981 results are currently withheld for further screening.”
